Bear Safety Training
This online Bear Awareness Course will guide you through what you need to know when in bear country, from the basics of bear safety, to using bear defense equipment.
Our comprehensive course will explain in detail what you need to know, emphasize key points and test your knowledge retention after each module. The course has been designed to ensure you have a good understanding of bear safety and are able to stay safe in the event of an encounter. After completion of this course, you will be issued a certificate of completion.

Course Outline
1. Behaviour
Chapter one covers basic bear behaviour, including the most common interactions you may experience, human habituation and food conditioning, as well as identifying the signs of a stressed or hungry bear and how the two main species act.
2. Identification
Chapter two covers the common locations you will find Grizzly and Black bears in Canada, as well as how to spot the signs of habitats and frequented areas they visit. You will also learn how to identify the difference between each bear physically, and by the signs they leave behind.
3. Avoidance
Chapter three will provide you an overview of the best practices to avoid bear encounters, as well as how to spot the signs of a bear in your area. You will also be lead through proper camp set up, with food and waste management techniques.
4. Encounters
Chapter four covers the two main types of bear encounters you will face when a bear approaches, and how to tell the difference between a predatory encounter and a defensive encounter. As well, you will be given best practices on how to remove yourself from the situation.
