Supervisory Training (201 / Level 2)
This Ground Disturbance For Supervisors certification program (also commonly referred to as “201” or “Level 2”) is intended to help you develop advanced excavation, locating, marking, and communication skills and attitudes. This course also explains the necessary process to plan and safely perform all job actions as per applicable regulatory requirements, acts, and industry best practices. This training is intended for anyone who requires a stronger understanding of ground disturbance hazards and procedures, or anyone acting in a supervisory role.
The online course will include 8 modules designed to encompass all supervisor and worker level job requirements. There is a final exam requiring a passing grade of 80%, which is required to earn your certificate of completion. Your certificate is available to download in wallet card and diploma formats. It is also available as a more durable plastic wallet certificate.
Trainees in Alberta also have the option to take this Ground Disturbance course in-class at our Calgary or Edmonton locations.

This certification is valid for 3 years. Proof of training certificates are issued immediately upon completion as a printable wallet card, wall diploma, and digital certificate. More durable plastic wallet cards are also available.

Course Outline
1. An Introduction to Ground Disturbance
Lesson 1 defines ground disturbance and terms related to ground disturbance. It reviews the responsibilities of key stakeholders and finishes with an overview of legislative requirements and industry standards related to ground disturbance.
2. Damage Prevention
The second lesson explores key terms, organisations and publications associated with damage prevention. You learn how training supports damage prevention, how damages occur, and some of the consequences of damaging a buried facility.
3. Damage Prevention Stakeholders
Lesson 3 walks you through stakeholders in the damage prevention community and how they work together to promote a damage-free environment.
4. Pre-Disturbance Planning
Lesson 4 explains a ground disturbance code of practice and reviews a variety of regulatory requirements related to pre-ground disturbance planning.
5. Pre-Disturbance Preparation
The fifth lesson reviews pre-disturbance ground search requirements related to buried facilities and their operators, including the role of one-call centres and locates.
6. Disturbance Execution
Lesson 6 identifies on-site disturbance execution responsibilities and highlights the importance of on-site documentation, effective communication, pre-job meetings and tailgate meetings. It also reviews regulatory requirements around hand expose zones and mechanical excavation.
7. Disturbance Closeout
This lesson describes backfilling requirements and notification responsibilities, and emphasises the importance of maintaining appropriate documentation related to ground disturbance.
8. Practical Exercise
This lesson builds on the knowledge gained from the course through a practical exercise where the learner takes on the role of a ground disturbance supervisor and answers a variety of questions related to a ground disturbance scenario.
