Hours of Service
This program is designed for transportation industry drivers. It covers the Federal Hours of Service Regulations, differences in Provincial Regulations, and information about driving in the United States.
This online Hours of Service course covers Canada’s Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations (SOR/2005-313). It is intended to help drivers and carriers understand and increase their compliance with the regulations regarding daily logs, driver requirements, exemptions, daily limits, emergency allowances, and driving conditions.
The course consists of 13 chapters and a final exam. The course may be started and stopped as needed, there is no time limit. It is fully narrated and includes interactive exercises in each chapter.
Once you pass your exam, you may print your wall and wallet-sized certificates. Your training also includes a plastic wallet certificate. This card typically ships within one day using Canada Post regular mail.

Course Outline
1. Course Introduction
This module introduces trainees to the course content, shares relevant regulations, and breaks down the course structure.
2. Legislation
The second module teaches learners about relevant legislation (the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations) and how this legislation applies with regard to carriers and commercial drivers. It also lists the responsibilities of motor carriers, shippers, consignees and drivers.
3. Duty Status
This module defines duty status and covers activities included in on-duty time, activities excluded from on-duty time, and what activities are included in off-duty time.
4. Daily Limitations and Mandatory Off-Duty Time
This chapter covers daily driving limits, on-duty time limits, mandatory off-duty time requirements, and core resting periods.
5. Off-Duty Special Circumstances
Module 5 teaches learners to recognize conditions under which daily off-duty time can be deferred.
6. Off-Duty Time in a Sleeper Berth
This module defines what qualifies as a sleeper berth and how to use it to adhere to off-duty requirements while driving solo or as a team.
7. Cycles
The seventh module defines cycles and identifies the on-duty limits of a cycle and off-duty requirements to reset a cycle.
8. Record of Duty Status
Module 8 covers the importance of a daily log and identifies documents that support the information in it.
9. Electronic Logging Devices
This module covers the use of electronic logging devices including their functions, requirements, contents, and what to do in the event of its failure.
10. Other Records of Duty Status
This chapter outlines other means of recording the duty status and what information drivers must record. It identifies the requirements for the certification and verification of records and lists the records that drivers must have with them at all times.
11. Inspections and Non-Compliance
Module 11 covers inspectors and their powers, the responsibilities of drivers and motor carriers during an inspection, and some of the consequences of non-compliance.
12. Emergency Exemptions/Extensions
This module explains situations in which the requirements do not apply and identifies adverse conditions in which extensions are permitted.
13. Hours of Service in Other Jurisdictions
The last module recalls daily driving limits and off-duty requirements north and south of 60 degrees North and speaks to the specific legislation governing hours of service in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and the United States.
