Food Handler Certification
Food safety legislation across Canada requires all Food Handlers to be adequately trained to work safely with food and in food-related activities.
This online Food Handler Certification course has been approved by the provincial public health units in the following provinces:
- Alberta – Approved
- Ontario – Pending
- British Columbia – Pending
- Quebec – Pending
It will help you learn to handle food responsibly, prevent food contamination and foodborne illnesses, and comply with legislative requirements and industry best practices.
This course consists of 13 modules and a proctored multiple-choice examination. Students must achieve 70% to pass the final exam, and will receive their results immediately after exam submission. Once you pass your exam, you may print your certificates of completion (wallet and wall-sized). Training may be paused or resumed at any time, is fully narrated, is compatible with screen reading devices, and includes interactive exercises to ensure understanding of course content. This training content has been written to be accessible to anyone with a grade 8 reading and writing level.
To complete the proctored examination, students must have:
- Access to a computer with a microphone and webcam
- A relatively quiet environment to complete the exam
- A piece of government ID
- No visible notebooks, cell phones, headphones, or paper nearby
Students have one hour to complete the proctored exam and have unlimited exam attempts.

Course Outline
1. Course Introduction
This module provides an overview of the entire course. It will introduce you to the different features and interactive elements of the course.
2. Food Safety Laws
This module introduces you to the regulations around food safety. It outlines the responsibilities of different stakeholders and lists the requirements for permits and training.
3. Foodborne Illnesses
In this module you will learn about the causes and symptoms of foodborne illnesses. It also walks you through the compliance process.
4. Physical, Chemical and Allergenic Contamination
This module explores the causes and consequences of physical, chemical, and allergenic contamination. It also recommends ways to prevent food contamination.
5. Microbial Contamination
This module lists the factors that encourage the growth of harmful microorganisms in food. It outlines measures to reduce and prevent microbial contamination of food.
6. Receiving, Storing and Preparing Food
In this module you will review principles that must be followed when transporting, receiving, storing and preparing food.
7. Cooking, Holding, Serving and Discarding Food
This module outlines guidelines that must be followed when cooking, cooling, holding, serving, displaying and discarding food.
8. Time and Temperature Controls
This module reviews time and temperature controls that must be put in place during each stage of the food flow process.
9. HACCP Principles
This module walks you through the seven principles of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point system.
10. Personal Hygiene
This module outlines the principles of personal and hand hygiene. It also describes correct hand washing techniques and principles of glove usage.
11. Facilities and Equipment Maintenance
This module explains the importance of design and layout when constructing a food establishment. It also outlines cleaning and sanitation.
12. Waste Management and Pest Prevention
This module describes appropriate methods of waste disposal. It also explains the need for a pest management and control system.
13. Practice Test
The Practice Test comprises 15 questions. These questions are designed to prepare you for the Final Exam.
